What You Should Know About
NECK INJURIES

Examples:
Sprains, strains, overuse injuries, bruises, bulging disc, herniated disc, degenerative disc/joints, numbness/tingling/pain which radiates down the arm, head and face aches, jaw or TMJ problems.

Typical Causes:
Postural stresses, repetitive activities, bending and twisting, auto accidents, lifting injuries, slips, falls or sometimes no specific cause.

Symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Decreased range of motion/strength
  • Radiating symptoms down arm (numbness, tingling)
  • Decreased strength/endurance
  • Decreased function
  • Spasms
  • Difficulty turning head
  • Difficulty opening mouth
  • Headaches


Healing Time:

  • Healing varies widely depending on severity of injury/inflammation
  • Typically 2-8 weeks


Medical Treatment:

  • Rest
  • Modified activity
  • Medication, pain relievers, anti-inflammatories (steroid and non-steroidal), muscle relaxers, injections
  • Moist heat or cold packs
  • Progression of activity levels
  • X-rays, MRIs, nerve conduction
  • Surgery, in rare cases
  • Conservative physical therapy

What to expect from physical therapy treatment:

  • With a prescription from your doctor, a licensed physical therapist will perform an evaluation to determine proper treatment (under your physician's direction).
  • Treatment may consist of moist heat, cold pack, electrical stimulation, massage, ultrasound, traction, manual techniques, progressive range of motion and strengthening exercise.
  • The therapist will also help you with positions of comfort, activity modification, progression, body mechanics and recommendations to avoid reinjury.
  • A home program will be given to facilitate healing, decrease pain and numbness, and to improve function.
  • Some soreness can occur, especially early on, from progression of treatment.
  • Your physical therapist will keep your doctor informed of your progress or of any problems which may arise while you attend physical therapy.
  • Treatment typically ranges between 2 to 4 weeks, with sessions lasting approximately 60 minutes.
