Shoulder Rehab: An All Too Common Story

shoulder examSports can mean everything to a young man. Growing up in a world where professional athletes make millions a year, kids dream of fame and fortune from an early age. Seth, a young athlete, may have not dreamed of world fame, but the idea of being a star for his college team sent pride to the core of his very being. Growing up playing rugby, Seth loved the sport and was lucky enough never to suffer any major injury. The word “dislocation” was just a faint idea in his mind until one fall day he, like so many others before him, got to experience the pain for himself. During the fourth game of an undefeated season, Seth was tackled and as he hit the ground, felt a searing pain in his right shoulder. His arm became dead weight as he was helped off the field. Every breath he took, nearly brought tears to his eyes. When Seth got to the emergency room an examination showed that his right shoulder was dislocated. After some pain killers and muscle relaxants the doctors were able to position the shoulder back into place. The doctors instructed Seth to undergo rehabilitation to strengthen the muscles around the joint to prevent another dislocation. After weeks of simple movements Seth began more advanced resistance exercises with rubber tubing and eventually light weights. Months later, Seth was feeling stronger and as the summer break began he started enjoying some outside activities that included kayaking. During one beautiful summer day Seth and his friends decided to take a kayaking trip down a river they were familiar with. He had rolled his kayak a few times earlier that morning and was fine but during the next roll something went wrong and while Seth was under the water, his shoulder dislocated for a second time. Struggling to swim Seth made it to the riverbank as he gasped for air. After the incident at the river, Seth knew it was time for a different approach if he ever wanted to enjoy the activities he love so much. At the approval and suggestion of his doctor, Seth underwent a “Bankart repair.” After the surgery, Seth had to go through months of physical therapy. Day after day Seth fought through the pain and recorded his progress. It was months before he was able to regain strength in his right arm. By the fall semester he was halfway back to normal but was proud of his accomplishments. The physical therapy that had brought him that far was going to carry him the rest of the way to recovery. Seth still has not decided if he is going to play rugby in the spring semester, but other activities wont escape his contribution.
