People of all ages, at one time or another, may experience symptoms that may include dizziness, loss of balance and/or nausea caused by position or movement. These problems are not uncommon and may resolve themselves over time without treatment. However, if relief does not occur, aside from the use of medications, physical therapists are capable of providing treatment to reduce or relieve these symptoms.
The rehabilitation of these clients is specifically designed to meet the needs of those suffering from long term complications associated with such disease processes as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, Meniere's syndrome and perilymph fistula, as well as ablative surgical procedures including a labyrinthectomy or a vestibular nerve section. Also, vestibular and balance rehabilitation will help those clients suffering from balance and coordination problems stemming from other complications, such as hemiplegia, Parkinson's disease and cerebellar dysfunction.
Vestibular and balance rehabilitation requires a skilled, hands-on approach by a trained physical therapist to help increase the clients function, promote safety and to educate the individual on their disease. With this approach, the road to recovery will be paved with a steady, sure-footed path that will lead the client to wellness.
