BACK TIPS
- Change positions frequently to minimize stiffness. Avoid sitting for over 30-minutes at a time, at home or in the car.
- When bending or lifting, bend knees, tighten stomach muscles, keep back straight and head up to decrease back stress.
- Move your feet, instead of rotating at the waist. (Don't pivot or turn with feet planted.)
- When sitting, sit in a firm chair with a lumbar support. (A rolled up towel, with a thickness of about two to three inches, works very well.)
- Always test the weight you lift. If it feels too heavy or you are straining, GET HELP!
- A planned lift is a safe lift. Don't move around an obstacle course. Make sure the floor is clear of throw rugs, toys, telephone cords, etc.
- Try to push objects instead of pulling. It is better to use your stomach muscles instead of your back muscles.
- When carrying or lifting, keep weight of object as close as possible to yourself.
- When working overhead, be sure to have a wide base of support with feet.
Practice these principles and significantly decrease back stress. For more specific physical therapy recommendations, please feel free to contact:
